The most valuable thing we can do to have a positive impact on our environmental footprint is to manufacture furniture that lasts for a very very long time. We believe this approach is far more beneficial than simply saying we’re not cutting down tropical rain forests to make our desks – although of course we’re not doing that either. This philosophy runs through everything we do – it’s like our DNA.
So when, for example, we looked at how we can provide laptops without wires (this is important if we’re to enable true flexibility of space), the fact that the power packs from EarthWalk use the same technology as today’s most environmentally friendly hybrid vehicles (not Lithium-Ion batteries) and are manufactured from non-toxic, non flammable materials, whilst the SmartCarts are charged overnight using 60% less power than rival products (or 80% less than a stand-alone PC) was of equal importance to us as the effectiveness of the products themselves.
Our furniture designs enabling dual use of space (meaning you don’t have to have two rooms, each doing something different) can have a similar effect. Building costs can be reduced, land-use can be reduced, and the use of materials and energy can be reduced too.
